RICHARD FORDEXECUTIVE COMMUNICATION COACHING

Neurodivergent & ADHD Professionals

Your way of thinking. A clearer way to communicate it.

Practical, individual communication coaching that works with how you think, prepare and express yourself.

We start with what works for you, what has helped and what hasn’t, then build an approach that suits you.

See how I adapt coaching Talk through what you need

Does this sound familiar?

When the thinking is clear but the delivery isn’t.

These are experiences some people describe, not a rule about anyone. What helps depends on how you work.

  1. You have the answer but struggle to organise it quickly.

The idea is there. Getting it into an order other people can follow takes time.

  2. Your thinking moves faster than your explanation.

Listeners can lose the thread while you are already several steps on.

  3. Questions can interrupt your train of thought.

A question in the middle of an explanation can make it hard to find your place again.

  4. Conventional presentation techniques don’t always suit you.

Memorising a script or following a template can add pressure instead of reducing it.

A practical illustration

One message. Three ways to prepare.

Choose a route below and see the same message prepared in a different way. The message doesn’t change. How you get there can.

The message, the same in all three

“Move the release from Friday to Monday. Testing needs two more days. I need agreement today.”

A short, ordered list you can glance at. Some people find it helpful to see the order on a page.

  1. 1. The decisionMove the release from Friday to Monday.
  2. 2. The reasonTesting needs two more days.
  3. 3. The askI need agreement today.

One central idea with branches. Some people find it easier to think in connections than in lines.

Central ideaThe release date

  • The decisionMove it from Friday to Monday.
  • The reasonTesting needs two more days.
  • The askI need agreement today.

Saying it aloud, in different situations. Some people find their words best as they speak.

  1. State the decision.
  2. Give the reason.
  3. Ask for agreement.

Then try it aloud in different situations

  • In one breath“We should move the release to Monday, because testing needs two more days, and I need agreement today.”
  • To one person“I’d like to move the release from Friday to Monday. Testing needs two more days. Can we agree that today?”
  • After an interruption“Sorry, where was I? The release moves to Monday, because testing needs two more days. I need a yes today.”

A fictional teaching example. Not client work. These are three options, not a recommendation. What works for you is agreed individually.

The coach

You bring the thinking. I help find the structure.

I don’t start from a fixed method. We look at how you think, how you prepare best and where the pressure comes from, then build a structure that suits you. We agree adaptations together, and we change them if they stop working.

  • 20+years in global business
  • 1,700+people coached

Broad credentials across all my coaching, not a count of neurodivergent clients.

What that means for you

  • MessageFind a structure that suits your thinking.
  • MindsetReduce unnecessary pressure and self-monitoring.
  • PresenceCommunicate naturally without forced masking.

Illustrative scenario

Clear thinking. A different way in.

A professional knows their subject well, but finds it hard to put thoughts in order in the middle of a high-pressure meeting.

What coaching could explore

  • Trying three ways of preparing the same message.
  • Choosing the approach that works best.
  • Building a short structure to return to after questions.
  • Rehearsing with realistic interruptions.

Illustrative scenario. Not a completed coaching engagement.

How we work

A process that adapts to you.

Four stages, shaped around how you work. We agree what to adjust, and we change it as we go.

  1. Discovery

Understanding how you think and prepare.

We look at what works for you now, what doesn’t and where the pressure comes from.

We start by listening. I ask how you prepare at the moment, what has helped in the past and what has made things harder. We look at the situations that matter to you, such as presentations, meetings or conversations, and where communication feels most effortful. Nothing is assumed. You leave with a clear picture of how you work best and what we will try first, agreed between us. Nothing is fixed, and we can change it later.

  2. Development

Finding a structure that suits you.

We try different ways of organising your message and keep what works.

Here we build a structure that matches how you think. We try different routes for the same message, such as a written outline, a visual idea map or saying it aloud, and notice which feels easiest to use under pressure. We also work on finding your one main point first, so everything else has something to hang from. There is no required method. We keep what helps and drop what doesn’t.

  3. Dynamics

    Practising with realistic interruptions.

We rehearse with questions and distractions so the structure holds up.

Preparation is only useful if it survives the room. So we rehearse with the things that tend to knock us off course: a question mid-explanation, a change of order, a moment where your mind goes blank. We practise how to pause, find your place and return to the main point. The aim is to reduce unnecessary pressure, so you can think while you speak instead of monitoring how you come across.

  4. Delivery

    Communicating naturally.

We prepare for the day and agree what to adjust afterwards.

The last stage is the moment itself. We agree a simple plan that works for you: what to have in front of you, how you will start and what you will do if you lose your thread. You communicate in your own way, without forcing yourself to act differently. Afterwards we review what worked and what to change, so the approach keeps fitting you as your work changes. Nothing here is fixed, and you can change it.

Questions

Your questions, answered.

  • Yes. We build the preparation around how you think, not a standard formula: clear structure, notes that work for you and rehearsal that suits your attention. The aim is to speak as yourself, with less stress.

  • No. People experience ADHD and autism in different ways, and I don’t assume what any one person needs. We start with how you work and agree adaptations together.

  • No. We try different ways of preparing and keep the ones that work for you. If something stops helping, we change it.

  • Yes. We practise realistic questions and interruptions, and build a short routine for pausing, finding your place and returning to your main point.

  • It is a short set of ten questions that takes about 4 minutes. It gives you a picture of your communication profile and a sense of where to start. You can take it before deciding anything else.

Clear thinking. A different way in.

The situation

A professional knew their subject well and had plenty of ideas ready. In meetings their thoughts arrived faster than they could put them in order, and a question in the middle of an explanation could knock them off course.

Standard advice, such as writing a full script and memorising it, added pressure instead of helping. They wanted a way to prepare that fitted how they think.

What the coaching would address

  • Trying three ways of preparing the same message
  • Choosing the approach that worked best for them
  • Building a short structure to return to after a question
  • Rehearsing aloud with realistic interruptions
  • Agreeing adjustments to the plan after each session

What this scenario shows

A way of preparing that fits how someone thinks, a simple structure to return to after an interruption and less pressure to perform in a particular way.

This is a teaching scenario, not a statement of achieved client results. A real, permissioned case study will replace it when one is available.

    • Ask a friend to interrupt you once while you practise.
    • Practise saying “Back to the main point” and continuing.

Practical ideas to try

Three short exercises. Use what helps, and leave what doesn’t.

  • Finding the one point first

A single main point gives everything else a place to sit.

    Read the 60-second version
    1. Say or write your main point in one sentence.
    2. Check: could someone else repeat it back to you?
    3. Add detail only after the point is clear.
  • Recovering after an interruption

A short phrase can help you find your place again.

    Read the 60-second version
    1. Pause and answer the question.
    2. Say “Back to the main point” and repeat your one sentence.
    3. Carry on from the next step in your structure.
  • Choosing how to prepare

Try more than one route and keep the one that works.

    Read the 60-second version
    1. Prepare the same message as an outline, a map and a spoken run-through.
    2. Notice which one you could use when you are short of time or under pressure.
    3. Keep that one and set the others aside.
