Bridesmaid Speech: A Guide to Making the Bride Cry (in a Good Way)

By

Ladies, are you freaking out about giving a killer maid of honour or Bridesmaid speech at your bestie's wedding? Don't worry, our creative director, Richard Ford, the Wedding Speech Coach at Life is a Speech, has got your back!

With over 9 years of experience in the wedding biz, he's coached countless wedding speeches from the Best Man, Groom, and Father of the Bride. But let's face it, the Maid of Honour, Chief Bridesmaid or Maid of Honor (for our American pals) usually gets overlooked, and we're not having it!

Traditionally, the Maid of Honour doesn't give a speech at weddings, but who says we need to stick to outdated traditions? If you want to speak your truth and let everyone know how amazing the bride is, go for it!

Now, where do we even start? Writing a Maid of Honour speech can be tricky because there's no standard template or formula to follow. Unlike speeches from the Best man and Groom, there are no set rules for who to thank or who to toast. So, let Richard help you slay this challenge with his expert tips.

  • First up, let's talk about the length of your speech. Chat with the nearlyweds beforehand and aim to keep your speech under 10 minutes. Remember, we want to leave them wanting more, but we also want to do the Bride justice. So, make sure your speech is at least 750 words long. You've got this!

  • Next, let's not get sucked into overly formalities. We don't need to mention every detail about the venue or the wedding because that's what the other speakers are for. Let's keep it friendly and kick it off with a joke or a compliment.

  • When it comes to the content of your speech, let's get real personal. We're all about those classic anecdotes that highlight the Bride's best qualities and quirks. And let's not forget about the Groom! We need to give him a shoutout and tell everyone why they make the perfect couple.

  • Last but not least, let's raise a toast to the newlyweds! You can personalise this by referring back to something you spoke about in your speech, making it more meaningful and setting it apart from other toasts.

Giving a Maid of Honour speech may seem daunting, but it can also be a fun and rewarding experience. Trust us, your bestie will appreciate the effort you put into this speech, and everyone will be cheering you on. So slay that speech!
